New bubba - will install one harddisk, but not another

Post by daniel »

Hey.

I just recieved my diskless bubba (its even smaller and cooler looking than i thought), and wanted to install my 200GB maxtor diamond max 10 hdd. After several attempts and using the tips found in the posts;

http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?t ... t=harddisk
http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?t ... ht=install

and ofcourse the users manual

i gave up. The hdd and usbdrive took turns lighting up the first 40 seconds and after that it was only the front led that kept blinking (the hdd light is supposed to flash while formatting right?).

Then i tried with my old 80GB ibm deskstar, and that one worked immediately (with the same usbdrive containing the bubba.img). But this one is really noisy, so this can only be temporary.

I am sure that the maxtor is functional, as it works in my usbcasing (maxtor one touch II).

So my questions are:

1. Does anyone know what might be the problem with the first disk (i tried it both as master and cable select)?

and

2. Is it possible to install the files on the hdd from another computer and then insert it into the bubba afterwards, thus avoiding the installation from bubba, which i cant make work..?

The 320GB drive that came with my bubba takes about 27 minutes to format. The front LED blinks throughput. Don't know about the HDD's own drive.

I'd give it a half hour if I were you. When the light's on steady, it's done.

I gave it more than a couple of hours, and its only the first aprox. 40 seconds the hdd and usbpen lights are active (when i say hdd light i mean the one on bubba you can see through the vent holes). The front light is blinking the whole time

But thanks anyway :-)

Does bubba have a hdd light???? Or are you confusing the network led for this?

Hi all,

Ubi, yes, Bubba has a HDD light, an internal red diode. It's visible only through the top vent holes. The network light is green, also visible through the vent holes.

And Daniel, your problem worries me, you might have found some kind of incompatibility. You are correct that "cable select" or "master" should work.

One thing you can try is to use the "minimal install image", http://update.excito.net/install/minimal/. This gives you shell access to Bubba, and you can try to manually check the HDD, to see if you get any error messages? This might point us to the solution.

Let us know if you need more detailed help on this.

I changed the old noisy 80 GB deskstar to a 2.5'' laptop 80GB hdd i had lying around (using a 2,5 -> 3,5 converter) so my bubba is now completely soundless. Installing it worked like a charm.

As to the problem with the maxtor im too lazy to try with it again, as i reinstalled it in its usb-casing where it works as my backup drive.

As said before, thanks for all the valuable input :-)
