B2 and Popcorn Hour

Post by redw0001 »

I've just acquired a Popcorn Hour and wish to integrate it with my Bubba2. I've seen a few comments about B2 and B3 with Popcorn hour but would be really interested in a bit more detail.

1: What are you doing with it? I've got four test films stored in /storage/videos on the B2 and they appear to work fine in terms of access, this is really all I want to do. Music works great as well.

2: What interface do people use? Despite the nice facilities I think the UI is not easy, whilst I'm happy to poke around the rest of the family wont be. I've been looking at Myihome, has anyone got that working?

3: I've put no hard drive in the Popcorn Hour to date as I have plenty of space on my B2, as they are both plugged into my GbE switch I'd hoped this would be sufficient to start with .. and it appears to perform fine.
On performance I'm hoping to upgrade to a B3 in the new year so if I have any performance problems I think they might be short-term.

4:Trying to view photos through the Popcorn hour I only seem to pick up thumbnail versions of my photos - yet I did not think I had any. As I'm also installing Gallery3 I'm hoping this might not be as big a problem as it seems.

Any feedback appreciated, will update this with how I get on in a couple of weeks.

Hi redw0001,

1. Watching downloaded video is the main purpose, and what I use it for.
But I couldn't help installing telnet daemon and a better version of busybox so I could have a bit of control.

2. I use the default UI in the popcorn. It is cumbersome, but it works. I haven't tried Myihome.
I guess that if I had a big screen to use for interaction with the popcorn I might be more inclined, but I only have an old "thick" TV with no surround and the default interface does it's job.
What I really miss is the ability to sort contents other than alphabetically. I want to see new stuff first, so I use a FTP app in my phone to view contents and then sort it accordingly, or just telnet to it and do

Code: Select all

ls -lct | head
3. I used my popcorn for a year without a HDD, and it seemed to be working fine. Until I wanted to rewind an AVI file being played over the network. Or basically doing anything but the basics.
Get a HDD. Seriously. I have tried SMB and NFS shares on the Bubba2 and Bubba3. It works fine, kinda.
Having the HDD in your popcorn will also let you make it a resource on your network (and yes, it does nicely as a NFS share).

4. No comment, I don't watch photos

I have a thing on my todo-list, and it is llink: http://www.lundman.net/wiki/index.php/Llink
This should be able to run on the bubba, and it promises amazing stuff like watching downloaded RAR-files on the fly.

I had a look at llink as I know the family would not accept the default PopcornHour interface. llink now up an running on the Bubba2. Pretty straightforward with a bit of help from the guys over at the PopcornHour forum. Currently not got the jukebox skin working, but that is next. Installed from source following instructions on author's website.

Care to post a how-to on the wiki?
If you needed help from another forum, I guess I would need it too :-)
