B3 Email IMAP Server - SMTP Issues

Post by jovisuk »

I am swapping out my Windows Server and am going to use my B3 as a file server and email server.

I have no problems setting up email accounts to retrieve email from my mail server - simply using the web interface to add accounts and assign them to users setup on the B3, I have it set to download email from my mail server but leave copies on the external mail server.

I have my client machines using Thunderbird and configuring them in IMAP mode to use my B3 as the mail server, however sending emails is where I have issues.

I can send email if I am using my external mail server but this bypasses the B3 and therefore means that sent mails are not backed up on the B3, or tracked in the webmail interface.

Is there a way of sending emails out through the B3 so that sent emails are saved on the B3 and show up in the webmail client when users login to the B3 to check their webmail. I notice in the E-mail settings area of the web interface you can define outgoing mail server settings but I can only see that you can enter one username/password to send by, surely this isn't secure and will cause problems if more than one account is sending via the B3.

I am not really wanting to set the B3 to handle the email for my domain as I still want my external mail server to be the master server for email.

The only way I can see at the moment is to define the "Sent" folder in Thunderbird as a folder saved on the B3 within their "Mail" folder, but then the mails will not showup in the webmail client???

I hope all this makes some sense, and I'd appreciate any help from anyone. Please ask questions if it doesn't make sense.

Thanks in advance!

There is a rather complicated way in postfix that involves creation of a new transport in main.cf combined with the always_bcc option, but as far as I know you can get thunderbird to save copies of outgoing messages into an IMAP folder, which is visible in the web interface as well. I'm not fully sure what the correct setting in thunderbird is, as for it has worked like this from the start...

Hope this helps a bit
