Printer on mac

Post by winzhangout »

I have installed the latest Osx on my PC laptop and getted everything to work except the network printer connected to bubba two. I try to add printer "windows" printer and then i have to write login/psw and then i click on my added printer on bubba. NTS-STATUS-LOGON-FAILURE its quick stand when trying to print, and nothing happens. URL in mac it stand "smb//Bubba:139/PRINTER" On my lines its in swedish but first Name :PRINTER and Place and there is empty should i write something there. Or can my problem just be that my osx dont save username and psw to printer or something??

Hi winzhangout,

Could you try to use IPP and see if that makes any difference?

Short attempt on how to setup on Mac (Translated from swedish and OSX 10.4.x),

Select system settings, printer and add printer.

Select Internet Printing Protocol. Enter bubbas hostname in address. In queue enter /printers/"printer share name from bubba"

Enter a name and location for the printer.

Select correct printer driver and click add.

Try to print with that setup and se if it works.

Replying in English since this could be interesting for a broader audience.

Ok, so printing does work on Bubba when printing from a windows client?

Then it should either be permissions problems as you mention yourself. Or that you, for some reason, have a faulty setup on Mac, IE driver or something like that.

Could you try printing via IPP as mentioned above and see if that makes any difference.

Has anyone got this working?
Trying right now, and it doesn't seem to be any communication between the "print command on the computer" and my bubba2.

Hi Jamerson and others,

To diagnose this problem, start by browsing, from the computer you want to print from, to http://nameofbubba:631/printers/"print share name"

You should then see something like: Image

If not there is either problems accessing Bubba or some misconfiguration of the print server.

If you are able to access this page it should be possible to print to it.
  • On the mac, osx 10.5.8 here, select "Apple" then select "system settings" (Im translating from swedish here so menu names might be wrong).
  • Select "Fax and printing"
  • Click "+" to add new printer
  • Choose "Protocol:" select "IPP - Internet Printing Protocol"
  • Enter "nameofbubba" from above in "Address" field
  • Enter /printers/"print share name" from above in "Queue" field.
  • Select appropriate driver in "Print with" field.
  • Click "Add" to add printer
Now it should be possible to print on this printer.

Thanks for your answer, Tor!

I could reach that page, and also found the jobs I had sent to the printer. One was pending, one was processing. It had obviously been processing for quite some time.

My printer is a HP Photosmart 3210.

So: My mac sends the job to my bubba2, but something prevents the bubba2 from printing.

EDIT: I tried to cancel one of the jobs, and got some sort of message. Now I can't reach that page again.

Hi Jamerson,

You say that you cant reach that page. Could you try restarting printing from the services menu in the web-admin. Does this make any difference? (Ie, can you accesss it then?) Further more, what message are you receiving?

Hi!

I can reach the page.

What I did now was that I deleted the printer and added it again.
Then I went to the CUPS admin pages. It showed up like it should. I tried "Print test page" and it started processing. But nothing happens in the printer. And then after a while it says: "Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds…"

But nothing happens.

Hi Jamerson,

I assume that you removed and readded the printer within the Cups-webinterface? In that case what driver did you select?

Since you say that you have a HP Photosmart 3210 i suspect that this printer requires that you install the printer driver directly on Bubba :( In this case it should hopefully work if you install the hpijs drivers and then configure the printer via cups to use that one.

I actually added it through the "normal" bubba web admin interface.
But you are probably right. I need to find drivers...

This project: http://hplipopensource.com/.
They seem to have support for my printer. But I cannot find a pure driver.
Should I find one... Where do I put it?

OK.
I'm moving. Not sure if it's forward, though.
I did the following: apt-get install hplip

Now when I go to http://mybubba:631/admin/ I get this:
New Printers Found:
HP Photosmart 3200 series (HP Photosmart 3200 series USB #1)
HP Photosmart 3200 series (HP Photosmart 3200 series USB MY5AS8416B045K HPLIP)

The second obviously has something to do with HPLIB. However when I try to "Add this Printer" I come to the page showing a menu of drivers, and nothing there seems to fit. And if I choose one of the drivers and click continue I get an authorization prompt which I cannot get past (not with admin or user).

So: Something has happened, but I still have no driver, and I cannot add a new printer from the CUPS interface.

Any ideas?
