I have logged to the Admin console to add a printer to my set up. Followed the instructions from the user manual but haven't managed to add my Brother DCP-770CW.
The console can see the new printer connected using USB.
I can click Add and am asked to to enter a name and location.
Despite changing the name and location many times (incl. leaving the location blank), I systematically get an error message indicating that the process failed.
Any suggestion?
Thanks!
P.

Adding a Printer (error)
Re: Adding a Printer (error)
What is the error message exactly?
Details of the error might help to debug this for you. Silly question, so forgive me if you have done this, but you have got the Linux drivers from the manufacturer installed?

Re: Adding a Printer (error)
Hi there,
The error message is 2 folds: "Adding printer 'Brother' failed" and "Operation failed".
The point about the driver is a good one. I was ready to use the drivers when prompted, but following the user manual, I should be able to do the first 7 steps without using drivers, and the process here fails at stage 5.
There might be another problem, if I had managed my way through step 5, because there is an XP driver (the one I looked at), but not Linux....

Thanks!
Since my last post I had found what appears to be a Linux driver for the Brother DCP-770CW printer.
This is where my lack of Linux understanding is going to hurt.
The installation procedure looks encrypted to me
Am I using CUPS or not? How can I tell?
Even if I knew that, the installation instructions and command lines don't mean much to me.
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_u ... _prn3.html
or
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_u ... prn1a.html
Would really help if I could free up a port on the router by doing this, but not trivial (to me).

Re: Adding a Printer (error)
follow the dpkg instructions after downloading the driver
Re: Adding a Printer (error)
Looking at Brother's website, they only supplu a i386 driver and not a PPC or noarch driver, so this might bet tricky.
It might be possible to get them working using a generic driver possibly. Possibly using the foomatics libraries
