External NAS with Raid1 or 2 BubbaStorage 2x eSATA

Post by Puma »

Hello,

My idea is a RAID1 system with 2x 1Tbyte (nominal 1 Tbyte)

1. Can I do this in the near future with Bubba 2 with 2 external hdd's configured in RAID1 with software on bubba 2 to realise this?
- Can I move the home / storage / mail folders to these 2 hdd's?

- Is de bubba two powerfull enough to do this task?

2. An exteranal NAS with RAID1 connected via eSATA or RJ45.
- If the controller should breakdown can I still see my data?

- When will the Raid be ready for the bubba2?
- Can someone tell me what the best option is?

I still want to be the bubba in control and the folders placed to the NAS.

I think i want to have automatic backups to the bubba two internal drive.

Please advice.

Basically we initially support multiple disks using LVM, which is described in a good way at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_Vo ... er_(Linux). Thus there will be functionality matching both raid0 and raid1.

Carl,

Thank you for your quick reply.
I'm glad that you will support raid soon.

But is the bubba 2 fast enough for this task?

I like the idea of 2 external drives raid1.

I think it is better to let bubba2 control raid is better than an external NAS.

Is this a good thought? or don't you agree?

bubba two and raid-1 with bubba storage (eSata)

Post by nevdull »

Hi,

I recieved my bubba two (1TB) and bubba storage (1TB) today and started fiddling with raid-1 determined to get it running. The array is not yet rebuilt so I don't know what performance is going to be like once it is, but it currently works and looks very promising. I have documented my steps in my blog at: http://patrik.cqure.net/wordpress/2009/ ... -raid-one/

Raid1 support

Post by Puma »

Hello,

Is there any progress on the raid support??

Or is the best solution to get an external device with raid1??

Like: http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?t ... light=raid

or http://patrik.cqure.net/wordpress/2009/ ... -raid-one/

I won't like less power as mentioned by patrik

And has is this the best solution?

Hi Puma,

Unfortunately I was stupid enough to not measure any performance until I had actually set up the raid-1, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I have made some minor performance tunings since and have made some "not that scientific" performance measurements. I am seeing an average of 4.3MB/sec (34mbit) when copying files over the network, and I am sure the network is not the bottle neck as other systems on the same consumer gigabit switch have much better throughput. I have tried to change most of the settings on the disks (including DMA) without success.

For me the the performance was a pain moving 500gigs of data onto the drives. But now when it's all there and my Internet connection is limited to 50mbit it's OK. So far, It's the quietest NAS I have had, without the need to modify it which was my first priority. When I upgrade my internet connection I will need to look for a new solution.

Here are some stats from hdparm -Tt on both the raw disk /dev/sda and the raid device /dev/md0. I would be interested to know what average throughputs your seeing without the raid-1!

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 228 MB in 2.01 seconds = 113.53 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 172 MB in 3.02 seconds = 56.92 MB/sec

/dev/md0:
Timing cached reads: 228 MB in 2.01 seconds = 113.17 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 130 MB in 3.02 seconds = 43.00 MB/sec

Hello everyone,

Can someone tell me about the status of RAID support?

Can I do this in the near future with Bubba 2 with 2 external hdd's (ESATA) configured in RAID1 with software on bubba 2 to realise this?

Or is the best solution something like the CalDigit VR ???
