setting up mydomain.com...

Post by zander »

hi,

i have upgraded my isp contract so that i can use my bubba2 as a firewall, router, server. some of you have helped me before trying to access my bubba2 using easyfind but the problem was my isp disallowed it.

with my contract upgrade i should be able to use the full capabilities of the bubba2.

i want to set it up so that i can serve <mydomain>.com from it. i found a howto here http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?t=779 which looks pretty good.

so i want to just check the steps i need to setup my own web site so that i will not need easy find.

step 1. get <mydomain>.com

usually i use network solutions to get my domains. will i need anything else from them besides the name?

my isp has issued a static ip address to me for an extra $5 a month. do i need the static ip address?

step 2. follow the directions in the howto above.

is there anything else i need to get this going?

please advise.

If you want to be able to use the bubba as an mail exchange point, you will need to add an so called MX-pointer to the bubba; This is usually done by adding an sub-A domain , for example called mail.domain.com, which points to the same IP as your real domain.com, after that, you add an MX-pointer that points to mail.domain.com
step 2. follow the directions in the howto above.

is there anything else i need to get this going?

please advise.

If you use dyndns as the guide states you won't need a static IP since this tool finds your current IP and updates your DNS with this information so that <mydomain>.com always will point to your current IP.

If you use a DNS service that's not supported by dyndns or if you simply don't want to use such tools then you need a static IP.
