Mac OSX issue

My wife is having trouble accessing our bubba from her apple MacBook. Although she is able to connect to the bubba from the Finder, she is unable to drag files into her private folder (something about insufficient rights). She has however been able to copy files to her private folder using FTP.

I can't help feeling that there is something I'm missing, but I'm not sure what. I'm not a massive Mac OSX expert, so any help in this regard would be much appreciated...

Hi ian,

Have i understand correctly that you have no problems to access your private share from a non MacOSX computer (Windows?), but your wife is unable to do the same from her MacOSX workstation?

Hi Tor,

Yes mine does not work either. I have tried a number of Bubba/Mac accounts. It used to work...

I suspect that the recent update that included the torrent stuff has broken this - A previous installation of Bubba that has been upgraded AFTER the folders were created with a previous version seems OK.

The one that does not work had a replacement new hard drive, so I loaded the OS from the new image from the website, and then upgraded as per the instructions. It still works with Windows, and will work to folders that have rwx permission set for everyone.

Tim,

Do i understand correct that you transfered user data to the new disk somehow? It seems like permissions somehow is mixed up.

Does access via the web-admin filemanager work?

Tor, I am a bit embarrassed here - It is now working.

I had put a new (replacement) disk on my shiny new Bubba. My old Bubba has been shipped to you to have its memory upgraded.

Anyway, yesterday I wanted to load Midnight Commander onto the new Bubba (as per bjorn's thread) and "apt-get" did not work - It could not find the repositories.

I thought about this for a while, and realised that I had changed my modem router from DHCP to use static IP addresses AFTER I had got my old Bubba working. Then, stupidly, I had not changed the IP address settings for the new Bubba.

The new bubba was shipped without a disk, so I installed a new one and loaded a new image from a USB stick and then ran the "Update software" program from web-admin. I don't recall seeing any error messages here when I ran it.

After using web-admin on my new Bubba and setting the IP address to 192.168.0.242 and putting in the DNS address of my ISP - I ran "apt-get" again from the console and watched it install 6 packages from your repositories - so obviously they had not been installed when I ran "Update software" from the web-admin screen. I can now copy files to the private directories.

Sorry to have troubled you, I think old age must be kicking in...

Yes, you're right. I can access my private data from my windows XP laptop and via the web file manager.

My wife is only able to upload files to her private folder using CaptainFTP on her MacBook; even when the files have been added (which we can check via the webadmin filemanager), they are not always visible in Mac OSX Finder; very strange.

If I do Finder > Go > Connect to Server > Browse, and choose bubba server, a share called bubba.local appears. However, I am not able to copy any files to the private folder 'because "private" can not be modified'. The info for bubba.local says that it is read-only.

If I do Finder > Network > Home > Bubba, a share called HOME is created. However, when I browse to my wife's private folder, it's empty.

Hopefully you can make something of this...

Hi again ian,

What happens if you specify a share manually?

Choose Go in the finder menu and then Connect to server. When prompted for location enter smb://bubba/home

And another test. Can you reach the share from WindowsXP?

Hi Tor,

if I do Go > Connect to Server and enter smb://bubba/home then I can see my wife's private folder, but it is empty; Info shows that I can read & write...

If I browse to my wife's private folder from my Win XP laptop (logged on as myself) then I am refused access, which is obviously correct.

I have just created an account for my wife on my laptop. Logging in with this account, I can see her private folder and can read and write to it, so the problem is clearly OS X related...

You say that if you connect directly to bubba, smb://bubba/home, you can see the private folder. Can you add content to it? I assume the folder is not empty?

And what version of MacOSX, version and architecture x86/ppc, are you running?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The private folder is not empty (after adding files/folders using FTP), but OSX does not show anything in the finder. I didn't try adding anything yesterday, but am sure that I would not have been able to...

I'm not at home at the moment, so am not sure exactly what version of Mac OSX my wife has (it's a MacBook bought in July, if that's any help). My windows laptop is an 18 month old Sony Vaio, based on an Intel Core Duo processor and running XP Professional.

Hello,
The FTP client included in the Mac OS X Finder is read only so it is not possible to upload files to a FTP server using it. You'll have to keep using a real FTP client or switch to Samba as Tor suggested.
If it's a MacBook, then, it's Mac OS X 10.4.x.

so far, I have *only* been able to transfer files using FTP, in this case Captain FTP. The files that I transferred are visible in my wife's private folder when viewed using Captain FTP and from my Win XP laptop, but, depending on how I connect to the bubba on my wife's MacBook, her private folder either appears as empty in the Finder, or contains files and folders but is read-only.

So the problem that I am having has nothing to do with FTP and everything to do with Samba, at least that is how it appears to me....

So far, nothing I have tried gives my wife full read/write access to her private folder using the Finder.

Ian,

Culd you log into a shell on bubba, become root, and issue:

ls -ld /home/[your wifes username]/private

and see what that says.
