How to use an USB WIFI on my Exito B3

Post by Getmarken »

I would like to get my B3 as a wireless server on my home network to get faster access.
Now I use a 4G router as router connected with a 100 Mb switch. I need to know how (if it is possible) to fix this. I use Ubuntu as operating system on my computers.

Get another device.

The one you have now is a rebranded linksys, based on Ralink RT3572 chipset. This particular chipset is not listed as supporting master/AP mode, so you can only use it as a client. Also: the linux kernel only supports this device from version 3.1 up and you (currently) can't run such a kernel on the B3.

Thank you Gordon. But you mean that it is possible to make it working with another USB adapter?
If that is the case, what can i do to make it work?

In theory yes. I think you will be limited to 802.11g (54Mb) though with the 2.6 kernel, but you never know.

A good place to start is here

Atheros HTC appears to be supported, i.e. the B3 already has a driver for it. Whether you can make that work in Master/AP mode I don't know. The big problem will be to find a USB adapter that actually uses one of the supported chipsets, because manufacturers don't really advertise that sort of information.
