One more B3

Post by mJusik »

Hey, all.

I'm planning to buy a second B3. Mainly for backups. Im going for the wifi version and I'm planning to place it on the second floor of my house, next to a stationery computer. The computer on the second floor is using wifi. Right now my B3 and all the devices are hocked up to a router, sharing the same network.
My question is: Is it possible to connect the second B3 to the stationery computer via cable?

Tnx,
Martin

You need to be more specific than this. Of course you can connect. But do you want the stationary PC to act as a bridge for the B3? Or the other way around? Do you mean you want the B3 to act as a wifi client? From the sparse info you gave it is impossible to give a realistic answer

Sorry about that.

I'm planning to add the new B3 to my current network. To be able to backup/copy files over from my current B3.
Then I'll have one computer and one B3 standing next to each other accessing the same network via wifi. Is it possible to connect those to through cable somehow? What are the options? Should to new B3 act as a bridge to the computer? Router --[wifi]--> B3 --[cable]--> computer.
The computer will not always be turned on. But, of course the B3 will.

Hope it's clear.

You should probably start reading this Wiki

Some prerequisites:
  • Disable Wifi on your desktop computer and attach it directly to the LAN port of the new B3 - you should receive an IP address within 192.168.10.x.
  • Go into the network config of the web admin and change the IP range on the B3 LAN so that it does *not* match your current network (choose anything in 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16-23.x.x - a netmask of 24 will be okay to use)
  • Verify that you can still connect to the B3 and that you have now received an IP address in the new range
  • If you like you can now enable Wifi again on your desktop
You can now follow the Wiki to `connect your B3 as a wireless device to an access point`, which should connect your B3 to the existing Wifi network.

Networking may become somewhat weird or even unreliable on the desktop computer now. This is because two devices are now offering DNS services and a default route towards the internet through their DHCP service and will regularly refresh these offerings. To fix this you'll have to do some manual configuration to the wired network:
  • Create a static address in the same IP range on the desktop computer
  • Add a host entry for the B3 on the desktop computer and vice versa - this will fix routing, otherwise all traffic will pass through Wifi instead of the high speed cable
  • Leave the DNS and router settings on the wired interface of your desktop computer empty
Hmmm... Just realized that wasn't the question. The answer is: yes, it is possible.
