Question: network statistics per protocol

Prior to getting the B3 I used a Linksys WRT54G with the OpenWRT firmware.
A feature that I miss is the overview/statistics/breakdown of the network flow into different protocols.

So, my question to the community here is:

• How can I get the B3 to produce network traffic flow data based on protocol (e.g. HTTP, SMTP, IMAP, etc) and per host?

Which packages or installable systems that have such features do you know of?

Preferably I'd like to be able to query the data and populate RRDtool databases and then do graphing based on them so those features (e.g. graphing) witin the solution you suggest will add no value to me, rather the opposite.
