[Feature Request]Apply patch to allow overlapping BSSes

Post by RandomUsername »

Hostapd (the wireless daemon used by Bubba) is very strict about its behaviour. For example, if you have 40Mhz channels turned on, it won't enable it if your selected channel overlaps with another BSS. The screenshot from InSSIDer shows my wifi neighbourhood. My SSID is the one called "homenetwork". As you can see, there are two other, overlapping, 40MHz channels and from what I've read, ISP supplied routers and other equipment are not as concerned as being good neighbours as hostapd is.

Alternative link to screenshot, for some reason these forums don't handle images very well.

To quote someone here:
Why I'm not able to force 40MHz operation in my apartment? OK, I can "hear" neighboring
APs through the concrete walls with low signal quality, so what? This is my apartment, not
neighbors. And even if we share walls or floor, I'm still want to use 40MHz like the
neighbor did.
The link also includes a patch to change this functionality but it is for hostapd 0.7.3 and the version on the Bubba is 0.7.2. This patch may now be part of the official code, I don't know.
So my request is, can we get this patch applied to a version of hostapd available on the Bubba? I might have a go at patching and building a version myself and will report back here if I do.

Actually the latest version of hostapd is 1.0 and I've already made a request somewhere here in the forums for it to be upgraded since I also need functionality there which isn't in the version currently provided. So I guess we can form a joint request for newer hostapd AND inclusion of your patch.

Please please with sugar on top :D
