Huge log files: USB errors with no devices attached

Post by IanB »

Hi
I've had my new B3 a few days, and noticed that /var/log/kern.log (and syslog) are growing rapidly:

Code: Select all

Nov 2 15:46:00 b3 kernel: [154455.037612] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:00 b3 kernel: [154455.297615] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:00 b3 kernel: [154455.547614] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:00 b3 kernel: [154455.807488] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:01 b3 kernel: [154456.057487] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:01 b3 kernel: [154456.317490] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:01 b3 kernel: [154456.577489] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:01 b3 kernel: [154456.827487] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:02 b3 kernel: [154457.087363] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:02 b3 kernel: [154457.337365] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:02 b3 kernel: [154457.597364] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
Nov 2 15:46:02 b3 kernel: [154457.857362] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
So that's 4 errors every second...

There are no external devices connected at all.

Anyone else seeing this?

thanks,
Ian

Hi IanB, and welcome to the forum.

No, I have never seen that. There has been posts with the same message on the forum in the past (http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2579
http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2470)
but not without anything attached.

I don't know about this stuff, but my guess would be that the error is referring to the "Genesys Logic, Inc. USB-2.0 4-Port HUB", which should be an internal device.

Here is my humble advice:
Install usbutils

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install usbutils
do

Code: Select all

sudo lsusb -v >lsusb.out
and email support@excito.com with the result.
It might be a hardware issue...

Best regards,

Hello

Last year i had the same, but the reason for me to get these lines was a pasive usb hub connected.

Thanks Cheeseboy and pcrene for the feedback.

I've investigated a bit more, by attaching a USB sound device to the B3.
It was recognised straight away and the error messages stopped.

On the other hand - removing the sound device and plugging it in again doesn't
work reliably, sometimes it's recognised and sometimes not. At one point I
seemed to have two sound devices attached...

I'll install usbutils and take another look.

Regards,
Ian

This sounds strange and nothing we have seen here before. It is not impossible that you have a shaky USB hub on your motherboard. If you won't get it working you can always send your B3 to us for motherboard replacement.
