Bubba two upgrade - Please comment.

Hello,

I'm intending to update bubba two to lenny (if it works, then to squeeze).

I know all posts in this forum regarding this. I realize web interface will be lost (it's ok with me, I will try to find some replacements for functionalities I'm using, like remote starting of torrents and storage of documents)

Still, if I follow advice from this thread: http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f ... nny#p11893 and then change repos into B3 http://b3.update.excito.org/ would i get Debian Squeeze + Bubba 3 web interface?

Also, why is it necessary to upgrade from Bubba-two 1.2, and not from Bubba-two 2.0?

Why is it necessary to uninstall all applications mentioned http://pastebin.com/iVs997ks ?

Nope. If you follow those instructions you'll end up with a minimal install of Debian squeeze. The Web interface won't be installed.

If you wanted to give that a go then I'd suggest taking a standard up-to-date Bubba Two installation and just switching it to the B3 repository and seeing whether that works.

(Has anyone else tried that? Does it work? I haven't tried it because I actually wanted a minimal install of Debian.)

I can't remember the details, but I had package dependency problems when trying to uninstall some packages using a later version.

My purpose was to get a minimal install of Debian, so I removed anything that wasn't part of a minimal install. I didn't want the custom Excito stuff.

Just some other questions: isn't replacing bubba 2 repos with b3 ones dangerous? I mean B2 is etch and B3 is squeeze. Normally, the recommendation is to upgrade one release at a time, to minimize the risk of a screwup.

If so, it would be advisable I guess, to first upgrade to regular debian lenny, then regular squeeze, and then B3 ? (which would then update the bubba package?

Last question? I read a couple of times that kernel doesn't get updated. How does it work? Does apt-get recognize that the kernel is not in generic line and looks for next "bubba kernel" (and then NOT finding it in official debian repos, would just skip updating it?)

I'm not sure what the best thing to do is, but if I was trying then I'd first try just switching to the B3 repo. If it just works then brilliant. And if it doesn't then you could try upgrading via lenny and squeeze. That may or may not require removing the Bubba-specific packages first. I'd try not removing them first.

I'm afraid I'm not quite sure. I've never fully understood how apt handles kernels. But the way I tried to make certain that the Excito kernel was always used in my original recipe was to add:

Package: bubba-kernel
Pin: release o=Excito, origin "update.excito.org"
Pin-Priority: 1000

(and similar for other packages) to /etc/apt/preferences.

(At some point soon I must try switching to the B3 repo to see if there's a newer kernel now.)

No luck so far.

Direct update from Etch to B3 doesn't work (of course)

I tried Ian's method but can't get it done :/ I have prepared the usb (Bubba 2 ver. 1.2 image + 8313E21.itb file from version 2.0) and the LED is blinking forever :/

Any hints? Anyone?

Hey!

I managed to install squeeze ! Woah, I feel adventurous, all I can do with my bubba now is - connect via ssh ;> But slowly, of course, I plan to do more and more (hostapd to allow bubba function as a AP - this will be the first step)

I have a question to developers:

What are all these dists? http://b3.update.excito.org/dists/
elvin? hugo? vincent? upstream? stable? experimental? What are the differences between them?

I have tried following Ian's guide for updating to Squeeze, but just like you I got stuck with a flashing led. Did you do something in particular to get past the blinking led problem?
