B3 Backup speed

Post by philgaskin »

I decided to try using the B3 backup function for the first time using the B3 admin browser interface.
I added several directories to the backup and mounted a USB hard drive (using the web interface).
My directories totalled 56GB and I started the backup manually.
In total, the backup took 18 hours. I appreciate that 56Gb is a lot of information, but I thought it would be much quicker than that when using local disks.
I have now tried both USB and SATA connected disks as well as NTFS(-3g), FAT and the B3's default format but all take the same amount of time.
I get fast access to the mounted disk via samba yet the backup appears to simply trickle data to the disk with a minimum use of processor too.
The backup finally finishes OK although I am seeing loads of errors in the syslog which I have never seen before. These errors appear to point to wifi which is still working OK. I have copied a few lines of these errors below although the syslog is literally full of this stuff

It looks like you have been hit by this problem http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f ... dma#p12045

I already set my min_free_kbytes to 8192. The backup claims to have been successful too.
Is all this stuff just a warning and Linux has handled it or could it be that the backup is no good?

Generally in linux, if the file is copied, it's copied ok. I was going to say try restoring a few files and see if that works, but that doesn't really guarantee anything if the errors were in random files....

It could be that duplicity's performance is crippled because it is unable to allocate the memory it expects.
I sincerely hope that it would let you know if it failed to write a consistent backup...

I have no faith in duplicity or Excito's implementation of it. I would look into other backup options such as rsync or rdiffbackup.

I had the same problem and solved it by setting vm.min_free_kbytes = 8192
I don't recommend using NTFS-3G, it is very slow.
Format the disk as EXT3.

It is better to create a script and make it run using crontab:

For example

backup.sh

#!/bin/bash
#Main backup to Disk 2 (Connected with USB)
mount /dev/sdb1 /home/storage/extern/Ext_HDD_1021-1
rsync -vrav --delete-delay /home/asqu/data/ /home/storage/extern/Ext_HDD_1021-1/data/
umount /dev/sdb1

crontab -e (runs it everyday at 04.00)
0 4 * * * /home/asqu/backup.sh >> /var/log/syslog 2>&1

Thanks for all of your posts. I had already looked at rsync in the Exito wiki site. Based on all your feedback I'll give rsync a go.
Phil.
