How often does B3 check POP account?

Post by greatdane »

I have set up my B3 to fetch mail from my POP3 account. How often does B3 check for new mail on the POP3? Sometimes it feels like ages before I get new e-mails. Can B3 be set so that it checks for new mail every 2 minutes during the day and just every 10 minutes during the night?

As far as I understand the horde framework the system does not auto-check for new mail unless you click the "new mail" button. This because the server doesn't know you're actually still connected (due to the stateless-ness of the http protocol) and it doesn't want to mindlessly check pop boxes without need. But I may be completely mistaken. I guess roundcube would do a better job in that respect.

Isn't this a function of fetchmail rather than Horde? I imagine there must be an option somewhere in the conf file (at work at the moment so can't check myself).

The time i set in the config file /etc/fetchmailrc. It is the line

Code: Select all

set daemon 300
That sets how many seconds there is between the checks. A value of 300 mean that it checks every 5 minutes = 300 seconds.

Note that it might not be the checking interval that is the problem some times mails can take long time to deliver usually due to Spam filters. It might be the pop3 account that sometimes takes long time to forward the mail to Bubba. It might also be the mail program that you use to read the mail from the Bubba that has long interval to check if there is any new mails.

If i log on to my mailservers popmal i can see emails on the account which has not been downloaded to B3 yet.
I use Thunderbird on my local PC, and Thunderbird is set to check for new e-mail on B3 every 2 minutes, but very often I can find new mails directly on the account, that is not yet available for Thunderbird from B3.

Is it possible to set (cron job?) the configuration so that B3 checks for new e-mail every 2 minutes during daytime and only every 10 minutes during the nights/weekends?

First, why do you want the different intervals? Is your bandwidth that limited/expensive?

Assuming there's no simple way of doing this in the fetchmail config file I'd create two files, both identical except for the checking interval and call them e.g. conf1 and conf2. You could then have a simple bash script that runs at the time of your choice and renames conf1 to fetchmailrc in the morning and conf2 to fetchmailrc in the evening.

I have just installed Midnight Commander (apt-get install mc) and edited fetchmailmc, changing the value 300 to 120.

I can live with the 2 minutes mailcheck, I was just thinking that there was no reason to check that often for mail when not at work.

Thanks to all for answers. Wont be my last question.

Why don't you compromise and make it 5 minutes or something? If someone needs to contact me so urgently they can't wait a few minutes for a reply then they'll ring or text me.

Yes, and as a mailadmin I can tell you POP3 users that check their mail every minute eat up my connection pool. If you want your mail this urgently you should switch to IMAP instead.

I'm alone in the office. The B3 has replaced my nearly 10 year old and very trusted E-Smith server. Saves me money on power, less noise, takes up much less space and just as easy to administrate.

Would love if someone could give some help on adding a fax feature to B3. I use Actfax today on a Win XP Pro box who I would also like to shut down for good. (We used to be 5 people in the office). Are there a easy to install and use faxserver made for Linux, that can recieve faxes and send them as PDF attachments to my mailbox? I asume I can use a USB modem on the B3?

Just found this old thread : http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f ... =fax#p2191

I'll see if I can get Hylafax/Avantfax to work for me.

Any inputs on this subject?
