I suspect I just had a problem with Bubba but am not sure. Please advise based on symptoms.
Setup which has been working (Bubba up for about 30 days):
Bubba|2 WiFi + Bubba Storage, acting as firewall/router and connected to cable modem
Two Windos XP PCs and one Windows 7 PC accessing Bubba / Internet using WiFi
All working smoothly, then...
No internet connectivity
No Windows connectivity to \\bubba
Cable modem LEDs showing no traffic
ALl PCs still show connected to Bubba WiFi network (though Windows 7 connection status "Limited Access")
Bubba|2 blue LED is on
I left it like this for about 30 minutes but no change. Very occasional flicker on cable modem (probably probed by cable provider for mail forwarding), but clearly no traffic.
I went to shut down bubba and noticed B & BS are hot. I estimate 60 C (from schooldays I recall 70 C is just too hot to stay in contact with). Wondered if B had crashed, but if so, can WiFi can still appear connected? (Room temp is 24 C)
BUT!
When I press bubba shutdown button, blue LED flashed as expected until B was shutdown. Once shutdown, I pressed shutdown button again and everything is back to normal.
So my questions for support are:
1) does the LED shutdown procedure suggest Bubba was running fine? And if so, what might cause these symptoms?
2) what fault NOT in Bubba could cause these symptoms (I can't think of any!)
3) what fault in Bubba might cause these symptoms?
4) does hot, but not too hot to keep touching sound too much for Bubba? (I have increased ventilation by putting spacers under B and between B and BS)
Thanks
Mark

Re: Bubba 2 WiFi query
Sounds like something crashed on the Bubba. The heat is concerning but it could be explained by a process on the Bubba going crazy and using 100% of the CPU. I think the fact the Bubba still shutdown shows it's nothing to be too alarmed about. Have you modded the Bubba in anyway - i.e. installed any non-standard software etc?
Computers crash, it's a fact of life. I'd wait and see if it happens again. It might be a good idea to monitor the temperature over the next few days though.

Dear RU,
Thanks for the quick reply. Modified? Non-standard (lol) s/w? Well I have an rsyncd process running but and have installed some other Debian packages, but there's nothing sounding like a culprit. I've been using SSH to run rsync remotely to mirror lots of stuff onto Bubba. Not much else.
Will do as you suggest,
Mark

Re: Bubba 2 WiFi query
Oh dear...
..after 30 minutes or so I lost connectivity from the Windows 7 PC, while at least one of the others continued with Internet access, but within a few more minutes everything was as before. No access to Bubba/internet. Power down procedure ok. This time I've left Bubba off to cool right down (switched to my old WiFi router termporarily to write this). When I restart Bubba, if it is temp related it should I expect last longer, and I think it will be a cooler day tomorrow!

Have you looked in the system log or anything? You can do it through the web interface if you're comfortable with SSHing into the box.

Hmm, not looking good. Left Bubba off all night so I could do a temperature test this morning:RandomUsername wrote:Have you looked in the system log or anything? You can do it through the web interface if you're comfortable with SSHing into the box.
Bubba boots, seemed a while before WiFi would connect but then ok. No internet. Examined syslog and it seems the following section is repeated ALL DAY yesterday (and no doubt earlier). The start of the syslog is 06:30 and Bubba failed aourd 16:30 so the following errors were occuring for at least 12 hours before Bubba stopped responding. Any ideas as to what this is about?
The following is from the start of /var/log/syslog
Code: Select all

Re: Bubba 2 WiFi query
I would suggest you try to contact the Excito crew by mail. There may be some fault with your Bubba hardware. If so they may be able to correct this by swapping your Bubba.

Yes, good idea, thanks.Binkem wrote:I would suggest you try to contact the Excito crew by mail. There may be some fault with your Bubba hardware. If so they may be able to correct this by swapping your Bubba.
