I changed the old noisy 80 GB deskstar to a 2.5'' laptop 80GB hdd i had lying around (using a 2,5 -> 3,5 converter) so my bubba is now completely soundless. Installing it worked like a charm.
As to the problem with the maxtor im too lazy to try with it again, as i reinstalled it in its usb-casing ...
