Can't get HDD to work

I tried to install the only IDE drive i had lying around, a 13,5Gb disk, pretty old one but it's fully working. I can't get it to work, doesn't format or anything. I get some activity from the hd led and the led on my USB stick for appr. 40seconds then nothing, left it on for 45-60 min each time, tried cable select and master.
Should there only be the "bubba.img" file on the USB stick or should also the .md5 file be included?
