Seeking clarification on restarting torrent downloads.

Hi,
I am using the 0.51 update and bubbalibre's tiny little hack.
I normally start downloads by pasting the URL for a torrent into the download manager, as opposed to uploading a torrent file to ~/torrents.
For unknown reasons occasionally my torrent downloads stop. When I look in the ~/torrents dir I see lots of .ft* files that appear to be torrent files for the downloads that were going on.
After I restart ftd, (or reboot in the worst case) the ~/torrents/.ft* files are still there, but I don' think that my torrents restart. If these .ft files are present, are my downloads supposed to restart automatically, or do I need to delete all these .ft files and add the torrent files again manually?
I have seen a lot of posts about restarting torrents, but I think some are obsolete or do not refer to bubbalibre's tiny little hack.
Thanks,
Tom P.
