access to new B3 failed initially

I got a fresh new B3/2TB without wifi from the store.
Installations instructions tells me, that I should connect the LAN to the network (switch) and start the B3.
It should ask the DHCP server for an IP-Address.
Neither the DHCP server receives a DHCP Request, nor do I see any packets on the interface, nor is the B3 accessible by explicitly connecting my notebook to the 192.168.10 network to access a possible default network address.
The box hasn't been initialized. because I can't get access to it.
opening the internet explorer and typing in "B3" or
http://B3 (192.168.10.1) doesn't work either.
rem: That's my first B3, so I'm a newbee with this NAS.

Does the blue led on your B3 burn contantly, or does it blink? If it burns contantly your B3 has booted and is running else, it's probably failing to boot properly.

The blue led burns constantly.
If I push the power button for around 5 seconds, it shut the system down (as can be seen via the violet led) and powers off.
Turning the system on, the led blinks the other way round. It seemed, that the system starts regularly.
I may add to the problem: I never have plugged the WAN access in. Only the LAN interface used

Ok, seems as your system boots as it should, but network fails. Do you have link on the network? (I.e. does the link leds on yoru switch and on B3 light/blink properly?)

If the blue led burns contantly the B3 should be running.
You might connect a computer directly to it and see if it gets an IP-adress. Then you should be able to connect to the B3. Else try connecting directly and assign an adress in the 192.168.1.0.x range, see if you can connect to 192.168.10.1

The network leds at LAN are blinking green.

I changed the switch, put into our company network to no avail.
I directly connected a notebook with the B3 to no avail. (using 192.168.10./24 Network and an address 192.168.10.100.
I turned ipv6 in W7/64K off and sniffed on the network with wireshark.
W7 detects the link and tries to register on that network. But no packet from the B3 comes in.
I repeated the test with 192.168.1.x to no avail.
It is possible to boot the B3 from an usb-stick, as described in the FAQ for an B2?

Next thing to try would be to do a full re-install, to check if the system isn't properly installed. The second would be hardware failure, in this case you should send it to us for repair. If you are tired of problem-solving on a new product don't hesitate to email us (
[email protected]) and we'll arrange a return, and send you a new product. We'll of course cover your freight costs.
I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.

Well, yes.
How would I do that?
Edit: I already downloaded b3-install-2.4.1.1.zip. But no instructions inside.

I bought the B3 in Germany, so I would resend them the product for repair. We have a look at that, after trying to reinstall the whole system.

No problem.
Edit: I found a German HowTo (
http://www.blog4it.de/?p=1440) and will try tomorrow.
In summary: create a bootable usb-stick, copying the install folder on it, press and hold the power button and then plug in the power cord.
Should install the system.
Correct?

I successfully installed the newest system onto my new B3.
Fairly simple. I like that.
When I looked at the syslog messages after the installation, I detected, that the clock had initially a date 2001-02-23 6:53:43.
I think, this is caused by an empty bios battery.
I assume, that therefore the LAN didn't came up within the installed system.
I will now shutdown the system and take it home.
We'll see, if it comes up.
Edit: Yes, it came up and is running. Now I'll have a look at the features

Great news. I hope your troubles are over now then.
