Question on usage of b3 backup using Amazon S3

I was wondering,

has anyone used the backup facility of b3 using the S3 online storage of Amazon.
According to the man page of duplicity (the backup software used) it is possible.

As the first 5 GB are free, and duplicity has also the possibility of encryption this looks a reasonable way to back up my mail (encrypted of course) off site.

But going back to my question. Has anyone actually done a backup to this S3 service with his b3?

Maybe it is an idea for Excito to offer the option to backup to dropbox or S3 in an easy way?

Hi Albert,

Yes, we have considered it but still not tested. If you find time to test, we'd be glad if you could share your experience!

Hi Johannes,

living in Europe I need the following commandline options as well:

--s3-european-buckets --s3-use-new-style

and one needs to choose another protocol than the ones available now (scp, ftp, ssh):

s3://host/bucket_name[/prefix]
s3+http://bucket_name[/prefix]

So I don't know how to test this at the moment.

Ah, understood. That's all we need to know for now then, when/if we begin to build something we'll test for real. Thanks!

Hi Johannes,

I just want to bump this subject. Being able to use online storage can be very usefull, especially in combination with the backup service. By the way, just read that Google is going to offer online storage next week as well.

What is Excito's view on this?

Regards,

Albert
