Extremely slow file transfer after 2.3 update?

Post by karl-petter »

After updating to 2.3 my Bubba3 have started to show very slow filetransfer via samba. For instance copying 4 GB will take an hour or so. Before the update it just took a couple of minutes.

I look at syslog and nothing strange there except the "Timeout: Bubba::Hotfix server terminating" which has been reported already. I run top to see if this would eventually affect CPU load but the CPU load is very low, squeezecenter takes 0.7% at the most. What can be wrong? How can I investigate this more?

Did some more research and see that since the update I get these error messages in the smb.log:

[2011/08/21 18:14:41.456473, 0] lib/util_sock.c:474(read_fd_with_timeout)
[2011/08/21 18:14:41.456665, 0] lib/util_sock.c:1432(get_peer_addr_internal)
getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected
read_fd_with_timeout: client 0.0.0.0 read error = Connection timed out.

No one else who has seen this since the 2.3 update?

We didn't get any reports of this, no. Did you try rebooting B3?

Yes but it didnt help.

When I did the upgrade I ran into the same problem as reported here http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3284 and was solved by doing:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
Have any ideas on how to investigate this further?

No, not without further investigations. It would be great if you could email support@excito.com with information on how to log on to your b3, and I'lll ask Carl (developer) to try check and find out what might be wrong.

I'm not really sure if it will be possible for you to log in. The problem is that the only internet connectivity I have is a 4G dongle which I have connected to my laptop which route it to the B3. Is there any easy way to give you access into the B3 wit this kind of setup?

Hmm, might be tricky. We'll start from the other end: How is your laptop connected to B3? Cable to LAN? Wifi? What OS does your computer have? Windows 7? Nothing else that changed than the upgrade to 2.3?

Extremely slow file transfer after 2.3 update?

Post by karl-petter »

It's a Mac OSX with snow leopard. I use the built in Internet sharing to make the 4G connection available to the B3. The B3's WAN port is connected with a cable to the Mac.

One thing I could probably do but which I never have done is to setup a SSH tunnel between my VPS(where I host a number of websites) and the B3. Would that give you ssh access to the B3 without accessing my VPS?

Another problem is that the laptop is my work machine so normal office hours the B3 wont be accessible if it works with the ssh tunnel.

Another option would be to try to get the 4G dongle to work on the B3.

Ok, but here we have something strange. File sharing (Samba or AFP) does not work over the wan-port, it's prohibited for security reasons (these protocols aren't considered secure, so they are normally not used over internet).

Did you ever get AFP/SAMBA file transfer to work through the WAN port? How did you do that?

Extremely slow file transfer after 2.3 update?

Nop, forgot to tell I have a PC too and a WD Tv live HD mediaplayer which are on the local network. I have also done file transfer from the Mac to B3 by connecting to the B3 wifi but disable that to make sure that there is no network loop.(though it seems the B3 and the Mac handles that well)

I am not certain of your setup but my best guess right now is that AFP/SMB traffic is looping through your internet connection somehow, since I know it can't go through the WAN port. Does your other PC (connected to your LAN) have an internet connection somehow, or some connection to your mac, except through B3?

Johannes, I made a quick drawing how things looks like:
Image

The bad transfer speeds I get when playing films on the mediaserver or copying files to and from the PC. As you stated, I cannot transfer files to the Mac.

There is no other internet connection than the 4G dongle so there cannot be any loops. What I tried to explain earlier was that I did a test with the Mac connected to the B3 wifi but that does not have any effect on the file transfers. I still have the problem with the setup as described in the picture.

To give you access to the B3 I could move the PC to the WAN port and have the 4G dongle connected to the PC. That would give 24/7 access to the B3 since I need to bring the Mac to work each day.

Hmm, I have discussed this internally but all we can say is that this is strange, and we don't recognize this behaviour. We would need either ssh access to do a system checkup, or that you send you unit to us for checkup/repair. Not much else we can do from here, sorry..

You are most welcome to ssh into my machine, I'm just not sure how. Since I get my internet connection through a 4G dongle I need some way to route that over to the B3 and do some port forwarding so you can access it.

I have been away the whole weekend but did a test on thursday last week to hook up the 4G dongle with my PC and then use that to route the connection to the B3 but I couldnt get the 4G dongle to work which was strange since it's Telia's dongle they sell with their 4G subscriptions. I'll give it a new try this evening and hopefully I get it to work.

If I get it to work, where should I send login/passwd? To support@excito.com? Should I use any specific subject? I guess you need root access? Is that enabled on the WAN? Or should I make sure you could sudo?

Hi Karl-Petter,

Yes, email to support@excito.com and let us know your external IP adn user/pass for login. If you changed your root password we need the new one as well. Other than that you don't need to do anything. :)
