USB Modems

I'm moving the functions of an old Fedora7 server to my new Bubba2 - most functionality has migrated nicely (mail, DNS, Web), but I'm having some trouble getting my Hylafax server going, as the USB modem (US Robotics) is not responding. (Well, it is responding, but sending nothing but a stream of carriage returns (0x0D).) Popping the modem back to my F7 box (an old Macintosh G4 Dual) has it working again.

Has anyone successfully gotten a similar modem working with Bubba? This is one of the last things I need to move before I can finally power-down the old G4.

The modem is recognized - after installing usbutils, lsusb does see and identify the modem - I simply can't talk to it. (I'm an old datacomm hand, so I know how to talk to such things - just not with Bubba.)

And, no, I don't want to use eFax or the like.
