Usenet with Hellanzb and SSL is slooow.. why?

Hi people, I'm a new owner of a Bubba|Two, and I'm starting to like it! :)

I've successfully installed Hellanzb Usenet Client, and got it running with Astraweb, both SSL and non-SSL, and got these speeds on my 100/10 Mbit connection (Comhem):

SSL - 800 kb/s
NonSSL - 2300 kb/s

On my PC using Newsleecher I got a download speed of 6 Mb/s with Astraweb SSL using 10 connections.

I would guess that SSL takes some CPU, which slows down the connection, but is it possible to get it faster somehow? Hellanzb always seem to use only one channel to download with, don't know why...

I tried to download a file from Sunet with wget in the shell of Bubba:

Code: Select all

wget http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Office/OpenOffice.org/stable/3.1.1/OOo_3.1.1_SolarisSparc_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz
On this >100Mb file, i got 5.8 MB/s, so the download speed shouldn't be the issue.

I'm trying to install SABnzbd, but it didn't work, so i upgraded python to 2.5, and now it complains about zlib missing. I'm gonna start a new thread about this I think, but any quick tips would be appreciated...

I'm curious to know if anyone has got any faster speeds on usenet with their Bubba with or without a SSL-connection? Is SABnzbd faster/better?

The whole point of buying the Bubba was to download from usenet without a big energy-wasting computer, so I'd be happy if it could be as fast as one! :D

Here's my tutorial on how I installed Hellanzb, please try it and let me know what speeds you get:
