Admin - Internal Server Error

Hi ppl! I need your help. New to linux and somehow I hosed up the bubba2 when I attempted to update its software through the GUI.

All the initial setup went fine. Created a normal user account with SSH access. Changed admin password. Changed system time. However, when I initiated a Software Update through the GUI, the system became unresponsive administratively. It never came back with any error message. When I tried to access the Administration via the GUI, I get an "Internal Server Error":
-------
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Apache/2.2.3 (Debian) mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 PHP/5.2.6-5ex1 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ssl/2.2.3 OpenSSL/0.9.8c Server at 192.168.0.90 Port 80
-------

It seems to be running partially since I can SSH into it. I could login as a normal user, and then "su - admin". But I don't seem to have root access even on the admin account. When I issued "apt-get upgrade", it responded with

"E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?"

How do I get root access? What's the best way to restore the system back to full operation? Thanks!

Nm the above. Found the actual root account password on here, and gained the access to execute the manual update procedure. My web admin gui is back online. Not bad for a linux noobie. :)
