Sharing files between two Linuxes

Let's say that i use bubba with a desktop pc running linux.
does it make sense to use Samba to share the files? Samba is something born to communicate with Windows pc, maybe is there some better alternatives to communicate between two linuxes ?
Just curious, i know samba works well
