avahi-daemon

I'd love to know what the avahi-daemon does. The man page is most unclear. What would I miss if I just removed it?

Hi,
It has to do with service discovery on your local network, so that you can find shared folders, printers and stuff.

I only know it gives a warning on mt-daapd (which crashes constantly on my fresh bubba (Write error: Broken pipe. Rendezvous socket closed (daap server crashed?) Aborting.)
