External drive spindown sometimes loses WAN connection

I have a weird problem. I have an eSATA drive connected to my Bubba|Two (and the /home partition on the external drive as explained in an earlier post). I have noticed that I sometimes can't access the internet. (This includes pinging from Bubba by ssh connection). I also noticed that the external drive was in sleep mode when this happens. Doing something that makes the drive spin up restores the WAN connection. The connection isn't lost every time the drive spins down, but every thime the connection is lost the drive has spun down, and just browsing a directory makes the connection come back again.
Can someome explain and/or help me fix this? An ugly solution would be a bi-minutely cron script that copies a file from one location to another on the external drive to keep it from spinning down.
