I'm seeing something very similar, trying to install a new disk.
The installer has left 3 partitions on the disk as expected, and the file system in /dev/sda1 looks OK.
It just doesn't boot...
My checkfs file is empty though, and wiping the disk with dd didn't help.
I'm seeing a strange pattern when my B3 is trying to boot on the new disk after the install image has done it's thing:
The front LED is purple, but not constantly on, it blinks off every 2-3 seconds.
At the same time all 4 LEDs on the ethernet ports on the back are blinking on/off every 2-3 seconds.
Did you see the same thing?

EDIT:
It turned out I still had the 2GB disk limitation.
This fixed it:
