interesting, I've never seen apache ship with numbered vhosts.
But instead of the emperical way, just enter

apachectl -S

and apache will tell you what the default is.

It may actually be a Gentoo-hack now I think of it. Gentoo installs from source and in most cases you can see it perform several patches prior to calling the make process. I think it's smart - Apache should think about doing this themselves.
