ftd.bin using lots of RAM

Post by kfudd »

Hello guys,

My Bubba2 has been running very well, nice and stable. Only thing I noticed is that the B2 alway had very little free RAM. It was not swapping yet, but I there was not much load on the server.

So I made an adjustment MySql to disable the innodb, which helped alot. Saves a good 50mb.

Now... the number one memory hog is ftd.bin. On boot it is using only 6mb, but after a month I noticed it peaking over 60mbs.

I figured, since I do use the bittorrent downloader a lot, this process is involved. But even with no files downloading the memory is not freed.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Looking forward to your feedback.

Hello,

I experienced this as a problem.

I updated the firmware for the bootloader (and checked the update)

I thought this problem occurred due to the fact I installed gallery2 with SQL so yersterday I reinstalled the bubba two.

But if I copy files say 100 about 5 mb each the memory of my bubba is full at 99% (via phpsysinfo). If the bubba is not doing much it is about 89 or 92% !!!!

During the copy (from winxp) the file transfer is going slower and slower it does not crash (i think) because horde and webinterface is still working but it is VERY slow. I need to restart the unit then.

If I reload apache via putty it is reduced to 30% but after a while it is 90% again.????

At the moment I am getting more and more concerned due to the fact I want a reliable fileserver!!

Anybody has an Idea or memory solution??

Well that is not exactly my problem, but I do notice the same behavior during file copies.

BUT, I believe this is normal as the OS will use any free memory for "disk caches". If you use the 'top' command you can see how much memory is being consumed by the disk cache on the bottom right of the status line on top of the screen. If the cache value (in kb) is high, this is good. If it is low and you are low on free RAM, then there might be a problem. Also the 'used swap' is a good indication of low memory.

Now, back on topic, my question was specifically aimmed at the ftd.bin using a pile of RAM after running a few weeks.

Hello,

Ok I see it might be an other problem but why is there so much memory used with a clean install and no downloads, no file transport, no music, no video and yes only a imap server which has to check my mail?????

What is consuming my memory??? and what can we do about it??

It is a small server and nothing to do consuming 256Mb !!!???

Sorry but i think something is going way wrong!

Thats the way it is supposed to be, Linux uses unused memory for caching just as kfudd said. If the memory is needed by applications it is released.

If you saw the opposite behaviour you would have a problem (lots of free memory after some uptime that is).

Hello,

Thank you for the information regardig linux memory use.

What I don't understand is: If I copy files to the bubba its slowing down util it nearly stops. (memory use 99% which should be good if I understand you correctly). Is it an other problem?? (with a clean install?)

Did you install this update?

http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?t=1364

This should fix some file-transfer problems...

Could be loads of things, the Bubba|Two while powerfull for its size is a machine with limited resources. If you haven't already done so update the bootloader.

If you've already done that you can most likely identify the cause of the problem by monitoring your bubba with vmstat and top while doing whatever it is you do that hangs your bubba.

Things to look out for: load, iowait, cache levels, block reads/writes, page in/out (among other stuff). Once you have identified what goes on you can prevent it.

Hello,

This evening i copied a lot (30 Gb) with ssh from mounted nas to the bubba hdisk. It worked well until it went slow again. (slow internet, explorer VERY slow etc totaly not responsive). I looked with the TOP command in shell. The largest program active ftd.bin (took 25 minutes and lots of RAM over 74 Mb!).

What is the problem is this the Torrent program? Then I will close it because this is not how a fileserver should behave!!!

Any other solutions??

Will there be an upgrade for this because i'm having these problems since the beginning. I thought it would be XP but now i'm copying only with shell!

Hello,

After I closed bittorrent the ftd.bin wasn't there anymore.
Problem however was still there, so ftd.bin was not the problem?

I am confused what is going wrong.

I did a restart and is ok for the moment.

But I want to copy alot......

Solution??
