To answer to some of my own questions, typing
apt-get install mono-complete seems to do the trick to some extent. After this typing
mono --version
to the command line, I get
Mono JIT compiler version 2.6.7 (Debian 2.6.7-5)
Copyright (C) 2002-2010 Novell, Inc and Contributors. http://www.mono ...
