Can't start mysql

Hi, I can not start mysql. Whenever I try to start it i get the following:

bubba:/var/log# /etc/init.d/mysql status
MySQL is stopped..
bubba:/var/log# /etc/init.d/mysql start
Starting MySQL database server: mysqld . . . . . . . . . . . . . . failed!
bubba:/var/log# tail -27 syslog
Nov 10 13:53:55 ...
